Building Resilience in Children Aged 1–5

The Perfect Start to Lifelong Strength

At Perfect Start Early Education, we know that a child’s early years shape so much of who they become. Between the ages of 1 and 5, children are not only developing physical and cognitive skills, but also learning how to navigate emotions, relationships, and challenges.

One of the most valuable qualities we can nurture during these formative years is resilience.

Resilience is a child’s ability to cope with challenges, adapt to change, and recover from setbacks. Whether it’s a toddler managing big emotions or a preschooler learning to work through friendship challenges, these everyday experiences provide meaningful opportunities to build confidence and emotional strength.

Resilience and the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)

As a Queensland-based early education provider, we are guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), which supports every child’s sense of identity, wellbeing, and confidence as a learner.

Resilience is woven throughout several EYLF outcomes, particularly:

Outcome 1 – Children Have a Strong Sense of Identity

When children feel safe, secure, and genuinely supported, they develop trust in themselves and the world around them. This strong foundation helps them approach new experiences with confidence.

Outcome 3 – Children Have a Strong Sense of Wellbeing

Emotional resilience plays an important role in overall wellbeing. Children are encouraged to express their feelings, seek support when needed, and understand that mistakes and setbacks are a natural part of learning.

Outcome 4 – Children Are Confident and Involved Learners

Children learn to view challenges as opportunities for growth. By exploring, questioning, and problem-solving, they build perseverance and confidence in their own abilities.

What Resilience Looks Like at Perfect Start Early Education

Here are some of the ways our educators help children build resilience through everyday learning experiences:

Nurturing Relationships

Positive, trusting relationships are at the heart of resilience. Our educators create warm, responsive environments where children feel valued, respected, and supported to be themselves.

Play That Encourages Persistence

Play offers countless opportunities to develop resilience. Whether a tower tumbles before it’s finished or children are learning to share and take turns, our educators gently guide children to keep trying, problem-solve, and celebrate progress.

Emotional Literacy

Understanding emotions is an important part of resilience. We support children to recognise, name, and talk about their feelings, helping them make sense of their experiences and develop emotional awareness.

Celebrating the Effort

Rather than focusing only on the end result, we celebrate determination, persistence, and problem-solving. Encouraging words such as, “You worked really hard on that,” or “You kept trying even when it was tricky,” help children develop confidence in their ability to overcome challenges.

Calm, Responsive Role Models

Children learn by watching the people around them. Our educators model calm, flexible responses to everyday situations, showing children how to navigate challenges with confidence and composure.

Resilience Grows One Day at a Time

Resilience is not something children are born with—it develops through experience, encouragement, supportive relationships, and opportunities to overcome challenges.

At Perfect Start Early Education, we are committed to helping every child build the confidence to try, the courage to persevere, and the understanding that mistakes and setbacks are valuable parts of learning. Because when children learn that they can fall, get back up, and keep going, they don’t just become resilient—they become empowered.

The Resilience Project

We’re also excited to share that our children are participating in The Resilience Project, a highly regarded program that supports positive mental health and wellbeing through practical, evidence-based strategies.

The program introduces children to simple daily habits that strengthen emotional wellbeing and help them navigate life’s challenges. At its heart are four key pillars: Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness, and Emotional Literacy.

Through engaging stories, conversations, and experiences, children learn valuable skills that help them understand emotions, build positive relationships, and develop a healthy mindset.

GRATITUDE

Appreciating and recognising the good things in our lives, both big and small. We encourage children to notice moments of joy, kindness, and connection, helping them develop a positive outlook and a sense of appreciation.

EMPATHY

Understanding and considering how others may be feeling. We nurture empathy by encouraging kindness, compassion, and respect, helping children build meaningful and caring relationships.

MINDFULNESS

Being present and engaged in the moment. Through mindfulness, children learn to slow down, focus their attention, and develop greater awareness of their thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.

EMOTIONAL LITERACY

Recognising, understanding, and expressing emotions in healthy ways. By developing emotional literacy, children gain the confidence to communicate their feelings and seek support when they need it. Through these experiences, children develop lifelong skills that support resilience, wellbeing, and positive mental health—both now and into the future.
